Anambra State Joint Security Team Foils Armed Men’s Operation in Umuchu, Recovers Suspected Stolen Vehicle

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that its Joint Security Team intercepted armed men along the Umuchu-Amesi-Uga Road on the evening of Thursday, December 5, 2024.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed this in a press release to newsmen at the Police Headquarters in Awka. He stated that during the operation, the team recovered a branded blue Hilux vehicle with Plate Number GDD 440 TJ, suspected to have been stolen from an unsuspecting member of the public. A search of the vehicle also revealed coolers used for food preservation.

SP Ikenga also said that the armed men were pursued after they attempted an attack on a police checkpoint in Ajali, Orumba North Local Government Area. In the resulting gun battle, one police officer and an operative of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) sustained gunshot injuries and are currently receiving treatment in a hospital.

According to him, it’s very unfortunately that the two operational vehicles belonging to the AVG were destroyed in a fire during the incident.

He further said that the Security operations are still underway in the area to ensure public safety, and further updates will be provided as events unfold.
