THIS DAY IN HISTORY.
On this day, December 25, 2009, a young Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was arrested for attempting to blow up a Detroit bound Northwest Airlines Plane with 289 passengers and crew members on board. He concealed a plastic bomb which was sewn into his underwear, but it failed to go off when he attempted to detonate the explosive as the aircraft approached Detroit. The emerging smoke from his clothes attracted the attention of the passengers and one of passengers grabbed him and pressed him down. He was immediately arrested as the plane touched down. For the passengers and crew members it was a miraculous escape from catastrophe.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab had everything going well for him: good education and a very rich father. Abdulmutallab is a billionaire businessman and former chairman of First Bank of Nigeria. Unfortunately, his son fell into the hands of an Al-Qaeda terrorist leader in Yemen Anwar-Awlaki. They met on the internet. That was the beginning of the young man’s journey into infamy.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s transformation into a killing machine was fast and dramatic. Indoctrinated by Awlaki, he told his father and mother not to contact him again because he had found “a glorious new life.” For a young man to repudiate his parents so quickly without a second thought is a clear indication of the evil influence of terrorist leaders over their potential recruits.
Umar Farouk was finally sentenced to life imprisonment on February 16, 2012. He told the court throughout the trial that he was proud of what he did and that if he had another opportunity, he would do it again. The presiding Judge Nancy Edmunds said, although she had no control over his motivation, she had the power to prevent him from causing future harm to society by putting him out of circulation for life!
He was incredibly remorseless. Worse still, he told his father not to attend his trial and his request was conveyed to his distraught dad. Umar Farouk is a brilliant and promising young man, but unfortunately he is one of the victims of indoctrination by the proponents of violent religious extremism. It’s sad that this young man wasted his future in the service of evil men. It’s intriguing why evil has such incredible attraction for even educated people. It’s not about Farouk’s age, because there are older and educated adults who are proudly ready to die for their role models of evil.
