The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Senator Uche Ekwunife (Iyom), had on Sunday, January 17, 2021, expressed worry over the recent Aguleri/Umueri communal crisis, telling the communities to espouse peaceful co-existence.
The appeal was made by the Senator upon the news of the communal violence which led to imposition of curfew by the state government on Aguleri, Umueri and Umuoba Anam communities in Anambra East local government area of the State.
Ekwunife, who expressed displeasure over the crisis lamented that the situation is capable of crippling socio-economic activities in the affected communities.
“I am particularly pained and disturbed over the lingering communal crisis between Aguleri and Umueri communities. It has gotten to the stage where all stakeholders must embrace dialogue as a tool to avoid further destruction and loss of lives and property.”
“Ndi Anambra are not known for violence. Peace, alternative dispute resolution should always take the place of destruction in our communities because peace and unity are important ingredients to our collective growth and development.”
While underlining the need for peaceful co-existence, the Chairman Senate committee on Science and Technology advised the youths of the communities to sue for peace, and shun all forms of violence.
Ekwunife called on the state government to, as a matter of urgency, find a lasting solution to the communal crisis, which she noted has lingered for too long.
