The Secretary General of the Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) Nigeria, Hajia Saudatu Mahdi has said the organisation is currently working with other women Non Governemntal Organisations (NGOs) to end all forms of Violence Against Women (VAW) and to extend support to survivals of VAW in every circumstance.
Mahdi stated this on Monday in Abuja at a one day multi stakeholders dialogue meeting on capacity strengthening strategies on Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls (EVANG), Gender Equity and Women Empowerment (GEWE) and Sexual Reproductive Health Rights for Women and Girls (SRHR).
She said WRAPA is implementing the project with support from EU and UN Women to reduce significantly or even end some forms of violence against women and then address those that cannot be brought to abrupt end and them to their barest minimum.
She further said WRAPA intends to strengthen the capacity of this NGOs and work closely together the next one year to support each other so that these menace called VAW is addressed and also reduced significantly.
According to Mahdi “The focus of our project is to strengthen women’s group and individuals who are working to end VAW and to also extend support to survivals of VAW in every circumstance. As you know, many women are doing many things, but because we are not as a group as it were, it becomes difficult to even mention the impact we are making. So one of the easiest ways is to first of all find who is doing it , how they are doing it and what are the gaps in how they are doing it and what can we do better to ensure that ultimately, we reduce significantly or even end some forms of VAW.
“So we have put them together so we will work with them for the next one year to see how we can improve their ability to do what they are doing better so that we have better result and to be able put into a box, everybody who is working and to see that you can support me I can support you and we can support each other so that these menace called VAW is addressed and also reduced significantly”.
In her address, the Programme Director for WRAPA, Ms Anisa Amunega Ari said the purpose of this meeting basically is to have conversations with these organisations on the challenges they are having in implementing interventions and what are the gaps they have individually to determine how they can better support them.
“We believe that it is important that we engage with a broad base civil society” she said.
“Each and every organisation represented here have their own strength and is important that in building partnership and collaboration that we leverage on each other’s strength to be able to maximise the result or outcome from this project. So this is the first meeting we are having in the FCT, we intend to have in other states and we are going to be having subsequent meetinga in the coming months” she added.
