VAT collection row: Wike talks tough, Lagos defends bill as FIRS writes National Assembly
The crisis over the Value Added Tax deepened on Wednesday with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, ordering companies based in the state to start paying VAT to the state government.
Wike gave the order during a stakeholders’ meeting in Port Harcourt with representatives of Shell Petroleum Development Company and other oil companies as well as business owners in the state.
The governor, who accused the Federal Inland Revenue Service of threatening companies based in the state, said any organisation that failed to pay VAT to the state would be sealed off.
Similarly, the Lagos State Government said on Wednesday that a letter written by the FIRS to the National Assembly seeking inclusion of VAT on the exclusive legislative list would not stop the bill on the tax currently before the state House of Assembly.…

Buhari’s visit: Police warn troublemakers, MASSOB seeks Kanu’s release
AS the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) visits Imo State today (Thursday), the police have warned troublemakers to stay away from the state or risk the wrath of security operatives.
This was as the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra surprisingly issued a sit-at-home order in Imo and four other southeastern states in an apparent disapproval of the President’s visit.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam, who spoke with The PUNCH in a telephone interview on Wednesday, specifically cautioned that its operatives and those of other sister agencies would be on the ground to deal with mischief makers during and after the President’s visit.

Passengers strangle Lagos doctor-turned Uber driver, steal car
A medical doctor, Morenikeji Oluwaniyi, has been reportedly strangled by a four-man gang in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.
The 27-year-old was said to have converted his Toyota Corolla to a Uber ride to raise money for his sustenance.
PUNCH Metro gathered that one of the hoodlums, identified only as Ahmed, requested to be conveyed to Ikeja around 10pm on Sunday.
The suspect was said to have been joined by three other members of the gang.
As the vehicle got to the Underbridge area in Abule Egba, the hoodlums reportedly pounced on him and strangled him.
After perpetrating the crime, Ahmed and his accomplices were said to have dumped the victim’s corpse on the ground and fled with the car.

Buhari’s 108 farm estates, herders’ settlements in disguise – Afenifere
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has condemned the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for his plan to establish integrated farm estates in the 108 senatorial districts of the country.
The group was reacting to the directive by the President to the National Agricultural Land Development Authority to set up the integrated farm estates nationwide.
In a statement by the Secretary General of the group, Mr Sola Ebiseni, on Wednesday, Afenifere described the planned programme of the Federal Government as another “veiled strategy of acquiring land in furtherance of the settlement of herdsmen across Nigeria.”…
