Insecurity In Anambra: Obiano Not Even Disturbed – PDP Alleges
The Anambra Stat chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, has taken a swipe on Governor Willie Obiano, over the increasing spate of insecurity in the state.
The state PDP Secretary, C.J. Okoli-Akirika, told The PUNCH in a telephone interview on Tuesday, that while political parties in the state had to put their governorship campaigns on hold because of insecurity, Obiano has done nothing to curb the wanton killings and destruction of billboards across the state.
Okoli-Akrika said, “It is really embarrassing that we keep talking about insecurity and the chief security officer in Anambra State is not interested.
“The southern governors of Nigeria have been holding series of meetings to brainstorm and work out modalities to emplace a workable security system in southern Nigeria.
“The governor of Anambra State has consistently treated that committee of states with disdain. When meeting was held in Enugu, the governor did not attend and never gave any excuse, which means he is treating that issue with disdain.
“Today, another meeting is taking place in Enugu, and report has it that the governor of Anambra State is not in attendance, did not send his deputy and did not have any excuse.
“The reality on the ground is that the governorship candidates cannot campaign; they cannot do that. It is not whether they want to do that or not; the truth is that they cannot try it. It is a clear case of insecurity; uncontrollable insecurity.

“The issue of governorship campaign is a secondary matter. Anambra people should not be killed or subjected to fear and we begin to talk about the conduct of a governorship election. Elections are for the living; the dead has nothing to do with election.”
On the destruction of party billboards, Okoli-Akirika also decried the destruction of billboards belonging to opposition candidates and their parties.
Reacting, Governor Obiano, who spoke through the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C-Don Adinuba, accused opposition parties in the state were making political capital from the security challenges.
He said, “No society plays politics with its security without severe consequences. It beats the imagination that the Anambra State opposition should insist in the last three weeks on playing politics with the current security situation in Anambra State.
“Each of the 36 state governors in the federation is merely the titular chief security officer of his state. No governor has control over the Police Force or the DSS or the Civil Defence in his state, let alone any of the armed forces.”
