NPA: Amaechi Will Not Bow To Racketeers, Northern Groups Warn

A coalition of Northern Groups has lashed out at those it described as maligning the Minister of Transport, Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi over events at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA)

The group in a communique issued after its meeting on Tuesday night, which was signed by Chairmen of Northern Youth Rights Protection, Comrade Haruna Abdullahi Maikano, Katsina State Concern Citizens, Abubakar Badamasi Funtua, Arewa Youth for Good Governance, Ibrahim Shehu Garko and APC Tiv Forum, Comrade Raphael Terkula along with other Executives and members who had converged on Abuja to condemn outrightly the attitudinal syndrome in defaming office holders to sabotage their offices.

“Our attention has been drawn to a publication by Thisday newspaper of Monday, November 08, 2021, where one unknowledgeable Louis Achi, extorted space in the medium to derail and prevaricate Nigerians on the working and functions of the Nigerian Port Authority, NPA and it’s management.

“It is quite unfortunate that certain individuals will hide under falsehood to portray the services and personality of the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and his teams in bad shape, commonly for flimsy political relevance,” it said.

The groups said tgat, “reading through the piece of writing, which was malignly sponsored, we the Northern Groups reiterate our stand on the truth and affirm our confidence in the person of Rotimi Amaechi for the good work he is doing in the Ministry of Transportation since his emergence as Minister.

“Closer look into the calibre of Amaechi, he’s a thorough breed professional who always uphold the santity of diligence and patriotism, we wonder why these misgruntles elements are after him and peddling rumour to tarmish his hard-earmed image and antecedents”.

They explained that in setting the records straight, they rose from series of meetings and came up with the communique to buttress the good deeds of Mr. Amaechi and to let Nigerians be well informed about mallacy of Luois Achi and his likes.

“Louis and his sponsors failed to reason along the parameters that NPA is an agency of government and not a family affair where an individual can doctor or impose control over the decision of the Managerial Board who legitimately have the right to decide and command functions relevant to the Act that establish the NPA.

“In one of the misfortune sojourn embarked on by the writer, he claimed that the Minister denied knowledge about the workings of the NPA, on what basis can a Minister in charge of an agency plainly deny access to the activities of the Agency he supervise?

“We want to say it unequivocally that Amaechi is always in tune with the day-to-day operations in the NPA. The Bureaucracy of the Ministry gave room for a representative on the Board of NPA whose responsibility is to brief the Minister on the activities of the Agency adequately and that is much in place,” they pointed out.

The groups said that on the procurement of dredging equipment to replace Joint Venture arrangement of the 2019, the JV partners have been doing perfect jobs over the years which cemented the relevance of their existence on the jobs.

“In what criterial will the Minister order a revocation of contract he has no singular powers to halt. Award of contracts is a process that must observe certain procedural perusal, the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) has major duty in this instance and such duties cannot be overlooked.

“Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi has displayed patriotism to the course of building a sustainable transportation system across the country, this is glaring in the public awareness.

“He has turned around the sector for better performance and Nigerians are proud of the achievements over the years. Amaechi is not new in the onerous task of redeeming qualities of moribond facilities, these he achieved as a legislator, an ex-Governor of Rivers State and is not relenting even as a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we are marvel to see antagonists not only to asperse Amaechi but to paint in black the workings of the NPA and Ministry of Transportation at large.

“The Thisday interview as portrayed by Luois Achi went ahead to pour it’s diarrhea to manipulate the President and Federal Executive Council FEC, saying the appointment of the Executive Director, Finance and Administration to act as Managing Director was without any prejudice, there’s no uncertainty in the NPA, the closeness of the Minister with Mr. President is not sudden, relationship has existed in-between both before the appointment and no myopical backbiter can truncate that rapport and trust shared.

“As groups, we frown at the recklessness in the piece just as we vehemently warn these ingenuous individuals to desist from wrecking images of those saddled with the responsibilities of building a decent nation, guarded by truth and fairness,” they concluded.
