Opinion: PDP, APC must field an Igbo presidential candidate in 2023

APC, PDP facing tough decisions in picking credible Vice President

Opinion: PDP, APC must field an Igbo presidential candidate in 2023.

In 2007, the north dared Obasanjo and made it clear that power must return to the north after 8 years in the south. It was the pressure from the north that forced Obasanjo to drop Dr Peter Odili at the eleventh hour and Yaradua became the lucky northern candidate.

In 2011, the north almost stopped Goodluck Jonathan from contesting the presidential election after the death of Yaradua. They forced Jonathan to negotiate for one tenure before they could support him in 2011.

In 2015, the north came out smoking, claiming to have been shortchanged especially as they claimed that Jonathan was dishonoring the one term agreement entered into in 2011.

This caused Jonathan a second term and he lost at the poll.

It is unfortunate seeing some northern politicians declaring for president in 2023.

In 2007, Saraki’s father was among the northern elders that held Obasanjo on the neck until he changed his plan on Peter Odili and went for Yaradua.

Today, his son Bukola has declared his interest to rub the south their turn of producing the next president in 2023. I wouldn’t want to talk about Atiku Abubakar and his role in fighting for northern interests.

It is a pity that some northern politicians are too selfish. In 2015, Atiku, Saraki, Tambuwal etc decmaped to APC to deliver a northern candidate. They left APC because they knew that north can not retain power in APC after 8 years.

This is time for all southern leaders especially to come together and make a strong statement on 2023. This is our turn and no one should be allowed to take it away from us.
