Texas mother sent to jail for giving 13yr-old daughter out in marriage to a-47yr-old man on religious belief
A Texas mom has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for allowing her 13 year-old daughter to “marry” a 47 year-old man based on her religious beliefs.
Cherry Payton was found guilty of allowing her daughter to be $£xually abused by her “husband”, Steven Carty, whom Cherry allowed to “marry” her daughter. Back in 2017, the, then, 14 year-old victim told her doctor that she was $£xually active with her “husband”. The mother told the doctor that she consented to the marriage and that it was apart of her religious beliefs.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the two had been married for nearly a year, meaning they were married when she was just 13 years old. They also discovered that mother also $£xually abused the daughter on the grounds of a different religion.
“Although the child victim in this case was failed by her mother time and time again, she was surrounded in the courtroom by a strong support system,” prosecutor Jessica Ramos said. “We are grateful to her adoptive mother, her court advocate, her CASA, and the caseworkers from Child Protective Services that supported the child throughout this investigation and trial.”
Carty was also arrested and pleaded guilty to $£xual abuse. He received 22 years and 20 years in prison for aggravated $£xual assault of a child.
