Naira Scarcity: Gov Okowa condemns killings and burning of banks in Delta
Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa has condemned killing of two and burning of banks by protesters on Wednesday.
The protests took event at Udu areas of the State, resulting in the death of two persons and the burning of two commercial banks over naira notes scarcity.
The protesters were on a rampage destroying and vandalising commercial banks’ assets in Express Junction, Udu road area of the State.
In a statement released via his official twitter handle on Wednesday, Okowa strongly advised against resorting to violence and burning down of banks.
He also appealed to residents of the State to refrain from violent acts and allow the government to engage with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to make funds available to banks across the country.
He said, “The news of the bank’s ATM gallery being set ablaze during a protest in Orhuwhorun Community, Udu Local Government Area is deeply concerning. While I understand the difficulties many of you are going through, I implore all citizens to remain peaceful during these trying times.
“We are fully aware of your concerns and the difficulties you face, but we strongly advise against resorting to violence, such as burning down banks that employ our people. Such actions will only exacerbate the problem and could have far-reaching consequences for our nation.
“We once again appeal to everyone to refrain from violent acts and allow us to engage with the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure that more funds are made available to banks across the country.” Continue reading
