Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State on Saturday lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for directing that the 2023 National Population Census be postponed.
This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Terver Akase, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, in Makurdi.
Ortom had, earlier this month, called on the Federal Government to postpone the planned census until sufficient security was guaranteed in Nigeria.
The statement noted that “with the postponement of the census now approved by President Buhari, Ortom urges the Federal Government to ensure that Nigerians whose communities have been taken over by bandits and armed herders regain their lands and return home.
The governor said, “the lives and well-being of the citizens must be placed above other factors for the nation to realise its aspiration for greater growth and development.”
The statement added, “Governor Ortom remains committed to the rule of law, justice, fairness and equity.”
