STUDENTS ADVOCATING FOR ANAMBRA STATE YOUTH GOVERNOR:
OKPALA CHUKWUEMEKA WRITES,
GAME OVER!
That street over there, and in that hut with rickety roof we come from.
On that falling wall we lean our backs to learn,
Learning how unfortunate we were to be born,
Born in an area where there are neither electric poles nor light,
A light to assure us that darkness has not much power,
Power not only to darken our path but also to darken our dreams,
Dreams that usually turn to nightmares even when it was not yet night,
Nights when just like the five foolish bridesmaids, we ran out of oil to lit our lamps,
Lamps that were brighter than our future in this forsaken place,
A place where in the midst of rivers we still lacked portable water,
Water which always threatened to quench our life instead of our thirst,
A thirst for just survival before the complaints of our bad roads,
Roads that sometimes serve as graves burying many alive.
Today, a man from another street entered in a high horse,
Horse that we had only heard in tales and stories,
Another stories he came to tell;
Telling us that he would give us light when we don’t even have a pole
To give us cars when we don’t even have a road
To give us education when we don’t even have a school
To give us mat when our ‘sleep’ has been murdered.
The promises he made was just like promising a shoe to a man without legs.
He want us to betray our brother and Support him that is a stranger,
A stranger to our problems and aspirations,
Aspiration for a better life that only one of us could offer us, because he also wears the same shoe with us, and so he knows where it pains us.
So no matter how much they try to lobby, silence, manipulate or convince us, our fists will always remain clenched in the air, shouting and advocating for youth Governance because their game is over!
