The Anambra State Police Command has arrested three suspected cultists, including a man impersonating a Police officer, and recovered one automatic pump-action gun and a Police uniform. The arrest was carried out in the early hours of December 18, 2024, by Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad in Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.
In a press release issued to newsmen in Awka by Anambta State Police Public relations officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga who stated that the suspects include a 50-year-old man, Chidi Ekwesiri, from Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, who was intercepted during a surveillance patrol along the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway near the Unizik Temporary Site. During interrogation, Ekwesiri initially claimed to be a Sergeant serving with the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos but later withdrew his claim. He confessed that the firearm in his possession was given to him by an unidentified individual at Ukpo.
According to SP Ikenga, the further investigation led to the arrest of two additional suspects, who are currently being interrogated.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, has directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for a comprehensive investigation. The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The Anambra State Police Command remains resolute in its fight against criminal activities and urges the public to remain vigilant and provide timely information to security agencies.
