Ogidi, Anambra State — Tension gripped Ogidi community in Idemili North Local Government Area late Thursday, September 11, 2025, after suspected cultists stormed a burial ceremony at Ezi Village, opening fire on mourners and leaving four people dead while 15 others sustained severe injuries.

According to police reports, the assailants struck during the night, causing chaos as attendees fled for safety. Swiftly responding to a distress call, operatives from the Ogidi Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, rushed to the scene, restored calm, and evacuated the wounded victims to nearby hospitals. Sixteen expended cartridges were recovered at the crime scene.

Preliminary investigations point to a violent clash between rival cult groups as the motive behind the deadly attack. The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the violence in strong terms, stressing the Command’s determination to stamp out cult-related killings and other criminal activities across the state.

“The Command is resolute in ensuring that perpetrators of this heinous act are tracked down and brought to justice,” CP Orutugu assured.

Meanwhile, police have launched a discreet investigation to identify and arrest those behind the attack. Residents have been urged to remain calm, vigilant, and to report suspicious movements to the nearest police formation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said updates on the investigation would be provided as events unfold.
