A police officer posted in the compound of the former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, in the Sagamu area of the state, has died.

The officer, sergeant, Adeleke Ogunsola, was reportedly knocked down by one of the drivers of the former governor while he (the police officer) was opening the gate.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that the police officer was rushed to the hospital after the incident but was confirmed dead.

A police sources who recounted the incident express bitterness on how things turned out. One said; “Every VIP is expected to have a gatekeeper, even before policemen are sent to their houses strictly for protection sake.”

The source who did not reveal his identity said When an officer refused to be used as a gateman in the house, they call the DPO that he should change him and he is redeployed.

The source also said that police officers posted to Gbenga Daniel’s residence are paid N2,500 weekly.

The police spokesperson in Ogun State, Abimbola Oyeyemi, confirmed the incident, adding that it was an accident and “can happen to anybody.”

When asked if it was the duty of a police officer to be opening the one opening a gate, he said; “We don’t know the circumstances that led to him opening the gate. We were not with him on duty”.

“It might be that the gate, maybe the gate is of two arms, somebody will be opening the first arm, another person opens the other. It’s possible” he added.

“If he’s not armed as of the time, he can help in opening the gate. But we’re not there with him. We don’t know the circumstances that led to him opening the gate.”
