Gunmen Kill Seven As Police Launch Manhunt In Ihiala

The Anambra State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators of a deadly attack in Ihiala that claimed the lives of seven people, including two unarmed passers-by. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, issued the directive following the tragic incident, which occurred at around 11:20 a.m. on December 30, 2024.

The Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a press release to newsmen in Awka stated that the assailants opened fire at a venue where preparations were underway for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2, 2025. Eyewitnesses recounted that the attackers also targeted two security operatives stationed at an observation post near the Local Government Headquarters along the expressway while fleeing the scene.

SP Ikenga also said that during the attack, the joint security team managed to rescue one of the victims, who is currently receiving treatment at a hospital and responding positively.

CP Nnaghe Obono Itam visited the scene to assess the situation and gather firsthand accounts from witnesses. Expressing his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as the residents of Ihiala, the Commissioner assured the public that those responsible for this heinous act would face justice.

CP Itam also reaffirmed the command’s commitment to restoring peace and order in the affected area.

Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the assailants and ensure the safety of the community.
