Meet the late Mohammed Bello Abubakar the man with the highest number of wives ever recorded in Nigeria. He passed on in 2017, leaving behind 120 wives.
Mohammed Bello Abubakar was born on 28 January 1924 in Nigeria. Masaba, as he is popularly called, is known for having stirred up controversy in his hometown Bida, Niger State due to his extensive polygamy, and for being outspoken, he was uncharged under Sharia law and sent to prison in 2008 for refusing to divorce 82 of his wives. Islam limits the number of wives a Muslim man can have to four, mandating they must be all treated equally.
Masaba, while he was alive, was a teacher and an Imam who lived in an entire block with his entire wives and family, he claimed he never chased any of his wives, that they chased him because he was a healer. Most of his wives were younger than 30 years of age, and a few younger than his elder children. In interviews with newsmen, his wives claimed that he was a good husband and father.
It is reported that during his marriage years he has been divorced 10 times and at the time of his death some of the wives were said to be pregnant. He is said to have fathered 203 children. He has also in interviews given in the past advised other men not to attempt marrying so many wives that it will k**l them fast, claiming that his case was a different one as he was ordained by the Creator to marry that number of wives.
So there you have it, the man who had the highest number of wives in Nigeria.
