NIGERIANS NO LONGER TRUST OUR SECURITY ARCHITECTURE – BUHARI

…plans to rejig structure
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said Nigerians no longer have confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
Buhari has, therefore, ordered an immediate overhaul of the country’s security structure.
National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.), stated the President’s position on the state of security in the country while briefing State House Correspondents on the outcome of the meeting of the National Security Council presided over by the Buhari.
According to Monguno, President Buhari said that the rejigging of the nation’s security structure had become imperative in order to prevent further “catastrophe” in the country.
He disclosed that Buhari had once again expressed his dissatisfaction with the insecurity across the country.
Munguno, who said the meeting discussed two memos on the problem of drug trafficking and addiction as well as the security situation in the North West and North Central geo-political zones, added that the President restated his earlier marching orders to the service chiefs to either shape up or ship out.
He also stated that Buhari noted that since Nigerians had lost confidence in the security sector, he’s determined to restore that confidence.
The NSA added that since the issues involved were operational in nature, the Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi, was already “working on something” to give a new direction to the country’s security agencies.
Monguno also said the reckless use of substances had been linked directly to insecurity the country had been dealing with, stressing that the use of psychotropic substances had been the force behind violent crimes in Nigeria.
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd), and the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari attended the meeting.
Others were the Service Chiefs led by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas; and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.
Also present were the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu; Director General of the Department of State Services, Yusuf Bichi; and Director General, National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Rufa’i.
Ministers in attendance included the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola; Minister of Defence, Bashir Magashi; Minister of Police Affairs, Mohammad Dingyadi and the Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Zubairu Dada.
A separate meeting of National Economic Council Sub-committee on Security involving few governors is expected to hold later today.
The meeting was fixed after last Wednesday’s attack on the convoy of Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on his way to Baga town.
