- People of Obinofia Ndiuno in Ezeagu local government area have cried out for help, calling on the Federal Government, Enugu state and the Local government authority to find a lasting solution to the natural disaster bedeviling their community.
A member of Board of Trustee, Obinofia Ndiuno Town Union, Ndubisi Offia while speaking on the natural disaster and threat to the survival of Obinofia people said, he has no word to describe the condition of their community.
Ndubisi Offia added that the only road to their community which also link them to the neighboring towns in Ezeagu Local government area as well as a community in Anambra state is deteriorating on daily basis as result of flood and erosion.
“In fact as it stand, we have no access road. Flood has washed away our road, we cannot access to our schools, churches, market or even have access road to leave our community to Enugu without trekking miles”.
He alleged that “the road has been awarded severally, the contractors were often seen in the site, but before you know it, they will just pack their equipment and leave”.
“This situation is not what only the local government can handle, it is time the state government intervene, NEWMAP and NEMA should come for our help” Are they waiting until the whole village is swept away by the flood ?” he questioned.
“The volume of flood coming from Oji River Local government area, Nachi in Udi Local Government, as well as our neighboring town, Obeleagu Umana; our community (Obinofia Ndiuno) is at receiving end”.
“There was a time when Fashiola visited our community during construction of Enugu-Onitsha express way; they came up with an idea to construct bigger and standard drainage in Obinofia. Meanwhile, after expanding the drainage; before you know it, the contractors disappeared from the site”
“This is a community that produces cassava and yam in large quantity and there is no way we can access the market or export our farm produce to the city. Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, we have stopped going to school”
Also, “Chigozie Agu who equally hailed from the community hinted that the easiest way to access the community is by trekking. No car or motorcycle can ply the road”
He noted that it is also dangerous for anyone to be on the road during rainfall considering the level of flood on the road.
