Nigeria has 774 Local Government. Let’s do some simple maths so we can all understand what is at stake here.
Naturally without any pandemic people die for health reasons in Nigeria due to the horrible state of public health services in Nigeria, coupled with fake drugs been distributed by callous citizens of the country.
For the purpose of this discuss let’s make some simple assumptions.
If Nigeria records ten deaths daily per Local government then the average deaths in the 774 Local governments in Nigeria would as a matter of fact record 7,740 deaths daily which should translate to 232,200 deaths per month and 2,786,400 yearly. This assumptions are based on 10 deaths only who died in our hospitals. (Government and Private Hospitals).
This figure exclude people who died per day as a result of Boko Haram attack, Banditry attack, Fulani herdsmen attack, armed robbery attack, kidnappers, ritualists and those who died at home because of their belief in self medication and orthodox medicine.
Nigeria recorded her first case of Covid 19 in February. According to NCDC figure as at yesterday, Nigeria have recorded 742 Covid 19 related deaths Based on available statistics, this is not up to the total number of normal death figures recorded per day before and during Covid 19 pandemic for the past 5 months.
32,588 confirmed cases, 14,447 recovered cases and 742 deaths
According to NCDC records in Nigeria
Going by this figure, the death rate of covid 19 in Nigeria is 2.2% while the recovery rate is 41%. Majority of those who died of covid 19 in Nigeria are between the age of 50years and above.
If you correlate the expense government is deploying to Covid 19 and the continued short down of economic activity. It simply does not make any reasonable sense everything being done. With the above assumptions normal deaths in Nigeria is about 1,161,000 in five months while deaths due to Covid 19 is 742 I just cannot get it.
COVID 19 AND EDUCATION
Despite our bad health care system and the lackadaisical attitude of our Government, Nigeria is one of the countries to be less hit by Covid 19 pandemic in the world. With 2.2% death rate, there is no justification for shutting down school (Primary and secondary schools) or proposing to cancel WAEC for secondary school students.
It is a great insult to common sense and collective intelligence if worship centers are widely opened during pandemic while schools are on lock down. This implies that we have misplaced priorities and the perception of Government towards education is nothing to write home about.
Here in Africa, base on available figures, South Africa have recorded 250,687 cases of covid 19 with 3,971 death.
The death rate and number of covid 19 cases in South Africa is more than that of Nigeria yet, the country have reopened schools. In Ghana, the country have recorded over 22 thousands covid 19 cases so far. As of today, Ghana have reopened schools.
Countries like China, France, Germany, India, South Korea, Sweden, New Zealand, Norway, Ice land, Greece, Denmark etc have high mortality rate of Covid 19 than Nigeria, yet, the Government of those countries have reopened Schools.
The Prime Minister of United Kingdom and that of Italy have already concluded that schools will be reopened in England and Italy in September.
According to the viral video of president Donald Trump I watched Yesterday. The president Confirmed that schools will be reopened in the United States in due time despite the country have recorded 131,336 death of Covid 19 cases. Hadn’t been Nigeria have recorded such no of death in the last five months, schools would have been lock down forever.
Now the questions we should ask NCDC and our government ?
1.. For how long are we going to be living in fear and panic despite medical experts already affirmed that Covid 19 is not leaving any time soon?
2.. For how long will our Government believe that Covid 19 doesn’t strive well in African when compare with European countries and America?
3.. For how long will our Government realised that children are less likely to contract covid 19 when compare to adults?
4.. How long will it take our local Government, State Government and Federal Government to fumigate schools and if possible, Construct Isolation center in each tertiary institutions?
5.. For how long are we going to wait for NCDC to record Zero case of Covid 19 cases before going back to our normal lifestyle??
6.. Will schools remain lock down for ever in Nigeria if there is no cure to Covid 19?
7.. What plans do the government have for teachers and auxiliary staffs of private schools?
I rest my case!
