Eddie Howe has admitted using the final minutes of Newcastle’s 3-0 win over Manchester United as a ‘training session’.

Newcastle inflicted further misery on the hosts following their Manchester derby defeat by ending their Carabao Cup defence in the fourth round.

Miguel Almiron and Lewis Hall struck in the first half, with substitute Joe Willock adding a third on the hour mark.

Howe was questioned post-match about his decision to bring on regulars Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes four minutes after taking a 3-0 lead

As reported by the Times, Howe said ‘the intention was to give minutes to players, so they could use it as a training session’.

Howe’s comment underlined the dominance of his side at Old Trafford, with the Newcastle boss looking forward to future tests.

The statement will be an further blow to Man United boss Erik ten Hag, who is facing mounting pressure following another dismal defeat.

Newcastle were handed another tough test in the draw, after knocking out both Manchester clubs in consecutive rounds.

The Magpies will travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the quarter-finals, as they seek to go one step further after losing last year’s final to Manchester United.

Howe’s side return to Premier League action on Saturday when they host second placed Arsenal, who remain unbeaten in the Premier League.
