The federal government has reacted to calls for reopening of schools the same way worship centres were reopened across the country.
“The reason worship centres were opened is so that people could pray for covid-19 to be over,” Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, responded at the Covid-19 Presidential Task Force briefing in Abuja, on Monday.
He further explained why schools could not reopen now.
According to Nwajiuba, “Education has the largest infrastructure in the country.”
“There are about 138,000 schools around the country,” he added.
He also said that if the schools were reopened, the transport sector and other sectors would open as well because, according to him, they are interrelated.
He maintained that schools would not reopen until safety was guaranteed.
“The primary purpose of government is the security of its people.
“The least we can do is to keep our children, and when we are sure of their safety, we will reopen,” he said.
He appealed to parents to keep their children, pending when schools would be reopened.
“What Government is doing is to take advice from scientists,” he said.
