An education expert and principal, Ray-field International schools, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Mr John Bassey has called on governments at all levels to borrow ideas from the operators of private schools to restructure the public school system in order to save it from a near collapse.
Bassey made the call at the wake of perceived dwindling educational system across Nigeria, saying that all hands must be on deck to save the situation.
The principal stated this weekend during the 2021 matriculation/graduation and prize giving ceremonies of the institution with the theme: “The 21st Century Education: A tool in Addressing Emerging Global Issues,” held at the school auditorium at Nsukara Offot Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.
Bassey who called for more budgetary provisions on education urged educational authorities to ensure that the curriculum of the private school is in tandem with the public school.
Speaking on the theme of the event, Bassey said education in the 21st century is a potent tool in tackling emerging global issues, recalling that the COVID-19 pandemic which brought about unexpected lockdown in the country did not totally halt learning in the private school, as some private schools were able to connect with students through online classes.
His words, “to save education especially in the public school from total collapse, government must make more budgetary provisions to the the sector, they should borrow ideas from private school operators, how they teach and mould quality students.

They should even call some educationists in the private schools to help them restructure the educational system in public schools so that it would be at the same level with the private schools. I tell you, where education will take us to in this country, we are yet to see it.

“In our school, we introduced so many things in our curriculum; we broke down Mathematics into Algebra, Arithmetic and Geometry also in English language we broke it down into, Essay, Oral and Grammar so that students can interface with different teachers in different disciplines of same subject and have a full grasp of the subjects.
“Education is going away from theories to practicals, therefore government should equip all the laboratories to match with those in the private schools.”
He, however, urged the graduating students to be worthy ambassadors of the school and put all the vocational and educational skills garnered from the school in use in their higher endeavors while solving emerging issues in the society.
The commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet who was represented by Roseline Mfon said governor Udom Emmanuel is passionate about the education of every Akwa Ibom child and urged the graduating students to build their career path on the solid foundation gotten from their alma-mater even as she warned them against cultism and other vices as they gain admission into higher institutions.
Also, the former permanent secretary of ministry of Education, Helen Ante describing the theme as apt and timely charged the graduands on 4cs which she listed as creativity, commitment, communication and conviction even as she prayed and wished them well in future aspirations.
