The federal government has revealed its plan to secure N45 billion grant from the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), to strengthen the fight against Out-of-School in the country.
The minister of education, Adamu Adamu, made this known yesterday in Abuja during the commemoration of the 2020 Commonwealth Day.
The minister added that already, the government had secured a funding facility of N220 billion through the World Bank under the Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) to also help reduce the number of out-of-school children in the country.
Adamu also said the government had designed and would soon begin the implementation of a five-year special project known as Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, specifically targeted at out-of-school girls between the ages of 10 and 20 at the secondary school level.
He revealed that the project on girls’ education is supported by the World Bank and its aimed at reducing the out-of-school scourge within the next two years.
Speaking about the Commonwealth Day, the minister noted the collective task of delivering to all Commonwealth member countries a cherished common future marked with togetherness, with functional ways of doing things and by transformation of the processes of doing them.
“This ideal to which the Commonwealth is committed is our responsibility to cherish and nourish. Let us rise form here, therefore, resolved in our hearts not only to work for that future, but also to take hold of it,” he said.
He however disclosed that more than 2000 Nigerians have benefited from Commonwealth scholarship since its inception, with an average of 12-18 beneficiary scholars every year.
Also, the minister of State, Emeka Nwajiuba, said that the Commonwealth activities was planned to stir the interest of Nigerian youths towards connecting, innovating and transforming themselves towards achieving a developed nation in line with the Year 2020, theme.
The Commonwealth Day is celebrated every second Monday in March and this year’s theme is ‘Delivering a Common Future: Connecting , Innovation, Transforming.’
