The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that Africa could face a “silent epidemic”.
The body said this might happen if its leaders fail to prioritize testing for it.
WHO Special Envoy, Samba Sow, raised the alarm at a news conference in Geneva on Monday.
Reuters quoted him as saying: “We must continue to push leaders to prioritize testing”.
“My first point for Africa, my first concern, is that a lack of testing is leading to a silent epidemic in Africa.”
Sow, however, noted that the continent has so far been spared the worst impact of the coronavirus.
Matshidiso Moeti, the WHO Director for Africa, noted that some countries had taken measures to curb the disease at a high economic cost.
The official said those measures meant that the pandemic was having a milder impact so far than some models had predicted.
