Anambra Election: Speaker, Others lose re-election

Results of the just concluded state House of Assembly elections in Anambra State have started trickling in at the various Independent National Electoral Commission local government offices.

The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Uchenna Okafor, lost his third term re-election bid to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Abuchi Bernard Udemezue, for the Ayamelum State Constituency.

The Returning Officer, Independent National Electoral Commission for the election, Prof. George Onwudiwe, said the PDP candidate polled 12,993 votes to defeat Okafor, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, with 11,445 votes.

Similarly, the Deputy Majority Leader in the state House of Assembly and candidate of APGA for Orumba North, Emeka Aforka, also lost in his second term re-election bid to the candidate of the Labour Party, Paul Obu. Obu scored 10,212 votes against Aforka’s 7,675 votes.

Also, the member representing Awka North and the candidate of PDP, John Nwokoye, lost out to the candidate of APGA, Chimezie Ikwunne.

Similarly, the Labour Party’s candidate for Anaocha 1, Ms Nkechi Ogbuefi, defeated an incumbent member and candidate of PDP, Ebele Ejimofor, who was seeking a third term, while Ejike Okechukwu of APGA retained his seat for Anaocha 2 constituency.

According to the results declared by the INEC Returning Officer, Dr Gideon Ezu, the member representing Onitsha North 1, Douglas Egbuna of PDP retained his seat scoring 7,140 votes against the candidate of LP, Chukwunenye Azuka, who got 7,135 votes.

The results declared by INEC RO for Dunukofia constituency, Prof. Alvan-Ikoku Nwamara, indicated that the APGA’s candidate, Jude Azotani, polled 7,488 votes to defeat his PDP opponent, Achike Onuah that got 4,333 votes.

The results so far showed that APGA had got about 17 seats, LP eight seats, YPP three seats, and two for the PDP. Continue reading
