Anambra State Government Sensitizes Council Chairmen, Councillors and WDCs on Second Wave of COVID-19

Following reports of second wave of Coronavirus by World Health Organizations(WHO) and Nigeria Center for Diseases Control(NCDC), Anambra State Ministry of Health is doing everything possible to ensure the safety of the citizenry.

Recall, when the coronavirus broke out in the state in March this year, Governor Willie Obiano demonstrated exemplary leadership.

The Governor built and equipped protective care centres at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital Anaku-Awka, General Hospital Onitsha, NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, CACOVID protective centre, Umueri and the setting up of Disease Control Centres in Awka and Onitsha. There are also Sample Collection Centres in all the local government headquarters of the state and a test centre at COOUTH Amaku-Awka.

Furthermore, the administration provided lots of palliatives to the women, children, aged people, youths and the disabled persons in all the 181 communities in the state to cushion the effect of the pandemic.

As the wave of the virus is here with us again, the Ministry of Health yesterday at Women Development Centre, Awka organised and trained for the second time, all the 21 Transition Committee Chairmen,326 Ward Councilors, Ward Development Committee Chairmen, Community Youth leaders and Women leaders to serve as focal persons in their communities.

Declaring the seminar open, the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke expressed dissatisfaction on non adherence to Covid 19 protocols in the state; a situation he said was dangerous to our society.

Governor Obiano said that the activities of Christmas are always high in the southern part of the country hence the chances of number of infected persons increasing during the festive period.

” Our sons and daughters are coming in from COVID 19 highly concentrated areas to merry with us. We are not going to stop them from coming into the state but we must be very careful by wearing our face mask properly, washing our hands at all times and using hand sanitizers .”

“If you don’t have any reason to go out please stay home to reduce the population in the street. Do your social gathering at a low key to avoid crowding. It’s disheartening that some people believed that Coronavirus is no more. Please, disregard such misleading information ”

In conclusion, the Governor commended the Commissioner for his tenacity in the fight against Covid 19 and urged the participants to support by playing their own role .

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala explained the symptoms of the virus to include: high fever, cough ,difficulty in breathing etc.

Said he, “don’t assume that Covid 19 is normal malaria; go for Covid 19 test if you feel the signs. Test is free. Reduce the risk of infecting others by sticking to the rules

Speaking on the Federal Government Insurance Development Care Fund, the Executive Secretary of ASHIA, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi said that about 85 persons will be registered in each community, comprising: 40 women, 25 children under the age of 5, the aged above 65 years and 5 disabled persons.

Continuing, Dr. Onyemaechi said that anyone to be registered under the scheme must have a National Identification Number and must be resident of the community irrespective of party affiliation. And such person must not be a beneficiary of any already existing Health Insurance Scheme .
