Anambra Police Launches ‘Operation Velvet’ To Enforce Insurance, Combat Car Theft And Traffic Violations

In a bid to enhance road safety and curb rising cases of car theft and traffic violations, the Anambra State Police Command has launched Operation Velvet, an enforcement initiative targeting motorists without valid third-party insurance and those flouting traffic regulations.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga Police Public Relations Officer revealed this statement to the newsmen stated that the Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc MNIPS PhD, officially rolled out the operation on February 25, 2025, following the grace period granted to motorists to obtain their third-party insurance certificates.
According to SP Ikenga, the initiative aligns with Section 68 of the Insurance Act 2003, which mandates third-party coverage for all vehicle owners.
Operation Velvet aims to:
Tackle traffic congestion and reckless driving
Reduce car theft and enhance vehicle security
Ensure compliance with insurance and traffic laws
Provide financial protection for accident victims
The enforcement drive involves multiple agencies, including the Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Attorney General’s Office, Motor Licensing Office, Anambra Road Maintenance Agency, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
CP Orutugu assured residents that the operation is geared toward restoring order, discipline, and safety on Anambra’s roads, making transportation smoother and more secure for all road users.
