The management and staff of ITV, a private television station in Benin City, Edo State, are reportedly nursing fears of possible spread of the coronavirus disease after news emerged that the Deputy Governor of the State, Philip Shaibu, who had visited the station for a televised interview, previously maintained contact with his steward who tested positive to the viral disease.
Philip Shaibu had undergone a test to ascertain his status and is still awaiting the result when, without informing the management of the TV station, he headed there for an interview, potentially putting at risk everyone he had contact or stood with in close proximity at the media organization.
Although individuals suspected to have contracted the disease are meant to embark on self-isolation until their status is determined by the result of a test, the Deputy Governor, in violation of the recommendation, refused to act responsibly until the news of his steward’s infection and subsequent evacuation of his office complex as a result became widespread, after reported attempt to conceal the information.
There are reports that the Deputy Governor’s recklessness has caused panic and anger in the private station. Health agencies in the state have condemned his action with claims that it sets a poor example to others considering the position he occupies.
