Rotary Club Bauchi Donates 10 Wheelchairs to Polio Survivors

As part of its humanitarian services to the society, Rotary Club of Bauchi has donated 10 wheelchairs to polio survivors in Bauchi state to aid their movements.

Presenting the wheelchairs to the beneficiaries on Friday in Bauchi, Chapter President, Rotary Club of Bauchi Central, Rotarian Chukwunonso Nwobi, said that the gesture was one of the humanitarian effort of the club to give back to the needy in the society.

He pointed out that Rotary International is one of the leading organizations that is championing the eradication of the wild polio virus through the provision of the oral polio vaccines.

Rotarian Nwobi urged the beneficiaries not to use the wheelchairs to beg on the streets, but rather use it to aid their movement while engaging in productive activities.

“These people are just a few out of the many crippled by wild polio virus and we don’t want them to be a burden to the society as a result of not being able to move about”, said Nwobi.

The Chapter President who said he was happy two of the beneficiaries are graduates with one having served under the National youth Service Corps (NYSC) further urged them to use the wheelchairs to pursue their education and businesses for those that are into business.

In his remarks at the event, Executive Chairman of Bauchi State Primary Health Care Development Agency BASPHCDA, Dr. Rilwanu Mohammed appreciated Rotary Club of Bauchi Central for the assistance, describing it as a “humanitarian move that will make the beneficiaries feel some sense of belonging”.

Represented by Deputy Director, Disease Control, BSPHCDA, Mr Yusuf Pate, Rilwanu Mohammed said that the Agency and Rotary Club have been working together for many years especially, in the fight against wild polio virus in the state.

“I urged the club to continue to provide maximum support to the state government to fight against polio not only in Nigeria but Bauchi state in particular”.

Two of the beneficiaries who spoke with our correspondent Hassan Mohammed and Saudat Galadima appreciated Rotary Club of Bauchi Central and BSPHCDA for the assistance and support pledging to use it judiciously for the purpose for which it is intended for.
