CALLS FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION TO CURB RISING SPATE OF INSECURITY AND WANTON DESTRUCTION OF LIVES AND PROPERTY IN ANAMBRA

The Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District and the National Leader of Young Progressives Party (YPP), Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Ubah has condemned in strong terms the burning of buildings inside Nnewi South Local Government Secretariat complex as well as the killing of an elderly security guard said to be in his late 50s who was allegedly woken up from sleep and shot in the head by the arsonists

In a statement released through his media office, Senator Ubah recalled how he moved around during the ENDSARS protests to save several public facilities from being burnt by irate youths, adding that “it is very worrisome that any person who desires economic growth and development would indulge in wanton destruction of public amenities meant to serve the people.”

The statement observed that Anambra South Senatorial District under Ubah’s watch has begun to enjoy the dividends of democracy as against what obtained in the past, adding that the insecurity pervading the area has stalled many people-oriented projects initiated by Senator Ubah.

He called on the Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, as the state’s chief security officer, to galvanize heads of various security agencies, community stakeholders and the lndigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leadership to brainstorm on how to restore normalcy to the state.

Senator Ubah, who lamented the economic woes and attendant hardships that the activities of the unknown gunmen have caused in the district, called for a rethink on the part of the perpetrators, noting that the struggle has been hijacked by criminal elements to perpetrate kidnappings, arson, rape and extortion while operating from various camps located especially along the border communities with Imo State.

“The fact that several of our people no longer feel secure enough to visit their towns especially in Anambra south senatorial district which is worst affected by this insecurity as a result of its proximity to Imo State, has brought about a heavy strain on the local economy,” said Senator Ubah. “This has crippled community development for which Anambra people are famous and heaped untold hardship especially on our women, children and youths.”

He urged Governor Soludo “to as a matter of urgency summon a security summit involving all the aforementioned stakeholders to discuss the way forward and find a lasting solution to the current brigandage and insecurity in the state.”

According to Senator Ubah, this will provide the newly sworn-in Governor with the enabling environment to deliver the much needed dividends of democracy to Anambra people.
