What APGA Must Do To Reclaim Anambra Central

By Hon. Comr. Asikason Jonathan

As INEC’s timeline for primary elections draws near, APGA is expected to read between the lines in order to avert the loss it suffered in the 2019 elections with regards to Anambra Central Senatorial District.

Pertinent questions like: Why did Chief Victor Umeh fail woefully in the election? Why did Uche Ekwunife achieve flawless victory? – were been raised. But the fact of the matter remains that Chief Umeh reduced himself to an Also-ran even before the election. Thus, it has been argued that any return-match between the duo of Uche and Umeh will produce the same result.

Whither APGA?

To reclaim Anambra Central, APGA has to field a candidate that is generally acceptable. The only candidate that appeals to both the establishment and the rank and file of the party is Hon. Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo(Onye Ndozi Nwachinemelu) , the sitting member representing Njikoka, Anaocha, and Dunukofia Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber.

However, Umeh is hellbent on his insistence to represent the district but the odds are against him. It is instructing to note that Umeh’s voyage in the Red Chamber was an act of sheer happenstance. Many had argued that without the judicial pronouncement that barred PDP and APC from fielding candidates in that special election that Umeh wouldn’t have neared the Red Chamber.

Truth be told, Umeh is more hatred than loved in APGA. In Anambra’s political milieu, he has through his possessive
party politics made many foes than friends. Many party faithful that he denied tickets, apropos of nothing, are patiently waiting for him to contest this time. So why will APGA lose its chances by tying its fate with Umeh?

Hon. Nwankwo, on the other side of the coin, represents a breath of fresh air. The two-term lawmaker at the Green Chamber has distinguished himself in both input(sponsorship of motions and bills) and output (providing basic amenities to his constituent) mechanism of the House.

Hear him: ” legislative job is not about shouting unnecessary! It calls for circumspection. It’s all about being result-oriented. You have to persuade, you have to lobby to represent effectively.”

Arising from the foregoing, there is no gainsaying that if APGA must reclaim Anambra Central Senatorial Seat, giving Hon. Dozie Nwankwo’s ticket is a desideratum.
